Sumatra PDF is a tiny open source PDF viewer, fast, portable and with a small memory footprint. I guess most of you are looking to replace the Adobe PDF Reader with a free program that wouldn’t take forever to load a document. Well, you can’t even compare Sumatra PDF’s speed with Adobe Reader’s speed, the open source program is way faster and that’s a big plus. Even compared with the fastest freeware PDF readers like Foxit or PDF X-Change Reader Sumatra PDF is still having a slight advantage, it seems to be a bit faster than those two.

The big difference is that Sumatra PDF does not offer any additional features, you can just display the document, search within that document and… that’s about it. In fact, the program options fit in a very small window

Most people don’t need too many options and features from a PDF viewer anyway, so the bottom line is that Sumatra PDF is free and fast.

Review
GoOo is a free open source office suite, providing all the functionality that Microsoft Office does, but for free! GoOo is based on the OpenOffice.org source code but it claims to be a lot faster. There are also a few other additional features in GoOo compared to OpenOffice.org. When Harmon recommended GoOo to me he said something like this: “It’s OpenOffice on steroids”
I’ve been using OpenOffice.org for more than a year now, since I threw away my Microsoft Office and decided to go on a “freeware mission“. I’m very satisfied with the way this freeware office suite worked for me, I had no trouble at all with it and grew to like it a lot pretty fast. The only problem that still persisted even in the newer versions was the very slow first-time startup. When I found out about GoOo I had to give it a try and see if it really is faster than OpenOffice.

With the timer in my hand I opened the same document in OpenOffice and in GoOo and the result was amazing. In fact, I didn’t need a timer to notice that, GoOo is two times faster than OpenOffice.org at the first-time startup and even faster if you compare the “second start”. They also made a few nice tweaks to the graphical user interface, it looks nicer overall.

The people that made GoOo also improved the way it handles Microsoft Works files, Word Perfect graphics and Excel macros.

The best thing is that GoOo is very open to improvements, anybody with coding knowledge can get in and get his ideas implemented quickly. You will have no trouble at all in switching from OpenOffice.org to GoOo because the functionality is almost identical except the few additional features that GoOo has.

Tiny Spell

Firefox, Word, Thunderbird and several other applications all have a built in spell checker that warns the user if a word that was written was not found in the dictionary file. There is however no general spell checker in Windows which means that users have to write their texts in programs that have a spell checker and copy paste them into the software that has none. Or they could write their texts without spell checking.
Both methods are not really practicable. The author of the freeware program called Tiny Spell seemed to have the same thoughts and decided to create a software that would work as an universal spell checker in Windows using the least amount of resources possible.


Tiny Spell checks all words typed in Windows against an English-American dictionary with more than 110000 words. This is done on the fly and the program plays a sound and changes its icon in the system tray whenever it discovers a word that seems to be spelled wrong.
The clipboard is monitored as well. It is then possible to take a look at the suggestions by either clicking on the icon in the system tray or pressing a hotkey that lists suggestions. The selected word can optionally be automatically copied to the clipboard or pasted into the document of the misspelled word.

Overview
LangOver is a tiny freeware utility that can convert your written text quickly between languages. If you forgot to press alt + shift to change the keyboard layout you just have to press a key and your text is automatically converted to the new language.
Review
I am a multilingual PC user, I write in my native Romanian, in English, French and Italian. I use English more frequently than the other three but when I have to write in one of those languages there’s always a problem with the special characters. Until now I used the Windows keyboard layout switcher, pressing alt + shift on my keyboard. But sometimes I’m forgetting to switch, so I produce unreadable pieces of text that I have to correct and I’m always losing time with that. LangOver is a freeware utility that helps somebody like me: you just have to press F10 and the text is automatically converted. The keyboard layout will be automatically switched too.

Let me give you an example of how it works. The text below is written with the Romanian keyboard layout. Notice the special characters.

Now if I press F10 the text will be automatically switched to English. Looks better, doesn’t it?

You can change the program shortcut keys if you want and also you can set it to run automatically in the background when Windows starts or not.

As you can see there even is a keyboard shortcut that triggers a Google search for a selected word. The good news is that LangOver supports any language! Yes, any language that you can think of! The memory footprint is not too small but it’s not big either, on my PC it took around 14 MB.

KeePass is a lightweight, easy to use, open source password manager. It allows you to build an encrypted database with all your passwords and protect it with a master password or a key file.
Review
I guess many of you face the same problem I’m trying to deal with: several accounts, from the Windows logon to email accounts, several usernames and passwords that you have to fill in, remember and last but not least… protect. If you’re looking for an easy and secure way to handle your passwords KeePass might be right what you need. It’s an open source program that allows you to build a database with all your passwords. The database will be encrypted using the most secure encryption algorithms around (AES and Twofish).

You can lock the database with a master password or with an encrypted key file. After you set up your “lock” you can add entries to your database, from Windows accounts to website accounts, emails or homebanking accounts.

As you can see from the screenshot below there are several features that you can explore with each entry in the database. Although the program is very easy to use it can get a bit complicated if you get into all the details.

The feature list of this open source password manager is simply unbelievable, I’m just going to list the most important ones: strong security (AES and Twofish algorithms used to encrypt the password database), it’s portable (you can put it on an USB stick and run it on any Windows system without installing), easy database transfer or export to txt, xml, html or csv files, customizable with the available plugins.

Overview
SimpleOCR is a free Optical Character Recognition program which can be used directly with your scanner, featuring error correction and an easy to use interface.

I never used an OCR program until now because I never needed one. And I still don’t, but my girlfriend does As a matter of fact I have a scanner in my house but it’s attached to her computer because she works with documents more than I do. Now she’s even very sure that she owns the scanner, even though I paid for it Anyway, this test wouldn’t have been possible without her help, so thanks Mary! She scanned a document for me and I tried to import it in SimpleOCR and convert it to a text file. As I said in the overview, SimpleOCR can import the document directly from your scanner, but since I don’t have one, I took the TIFF file that my girlfriend saved.

In only a few seconds the page was displayed in SimpleOCR, now all I had to do was to click on “Convert to Text“.

The conversion of the page took only a few seconds and after that the program window was slip into two parts, the original document and the converted text document. As you can see from the image below there were quite a few errors in the converted text, but the error correction feature works very well, it even has a dictionnary that suggests you the good alternatives. Although the converted text had some errors it’s quite easy to correct them and to have an accurate text at the end of it all. There could be a problem if you have a long document, it will take you some time to go through it, but still it will be faster than retyping the whole thing.

After you correct the document you can save it as a .doc file to use with OpenOffice.org or as a simple .txt file. SimpleOCR is able to handle machine writing and hand writing and is free to use for home and corporate users.
