 Scup

You may have heard of SoundCloud, a free ‘audio locker’ type service that will let you upload your audio files and then access them from anywhere. You may even have seen its distinctive player embedded in blogs and other sites, with it’s distinctive displayed waveform that users can insert comments into (see screenshot). If you would like to add your own audio files to SoundCloud, and specifically if you are looking for a quick and convenient way to upload said audio files via drag and drop right from your desktop, then check out free Adobe Air app Scup. (Multiplatoform: Windows, Mac, Linux).
This one is pretty self explanatory drag and drop. Two notable things, however:
  1. SoundCloud Auto-detects copyrighted material. This is the message I got when I was attempting to  upload a random mp3 file to test this service, which was in fact a copyrighted song “Our automatic content protection system has detected that your upload “Rhubard Mustard” may contain content that is copyrighted. As a result, we have paused the upload of your audio for the time being.” This, of course, has nothing to do with Scup.
  2. Scup is quite flexible when it comes to adding additional metadata : above and beyond the usual MP3 tags. Note that this is important insofar as placing your file, especially public files, in a way that makes them more readily identifiable and/or searchable (see screenshot below).
Scup Screenshot3
The verdict: if you use SoundCloud, you will love Scup.

- Better support for streaming video, peer-to-peer, and gaming: The software for UPnP, MTU, and client-to-client communications have all been reworked for speed and reliability. Some examples of applications that now work noticeably better from clients include the XBox 360’s Zune Marketplace and uTorrent.
- Better support for 3G/4G cards: A number of additional mobile broadband cards and wireless carrier configurations are now supported. Certain 3G/4G cards that were misidentified as Ethernet cards are now correctly recognized as mobile broadband cards.
- Options to turn off Fling File Transfers and Network Peer Scanning: Some people requested the ability to turn off the Fling Wi-Fi File Transfer functionality, and we have complied. Turning off Network Peer Scanning will make Connectify no longer detect web servers and shared drives on other computers, but will also prevent it from issuing ARP packets onto the network. Both options can be found in the Connectify Menu under Advanced Settings.
- Windows 8 Support (Beta): Connectify now works on Windows 8. This is beta level support, please tell us how it works for you.

 PDF CV

PDF CV is a neat little free web-based program that will let you create a new CV or resume in PDF format and then download it to your system directly. It’s super simple, very easy to get the hang of, and costs nothing.
There’s been a lot of changes in the last twelve years. I suppose you can say that at pretty much any time in any year, but specifically I am speaking about language. We constantly, as a people and as a nation, change our colloquialisms, vernacular, and basic usage of nearly any term we want at nearly any moment with nearly no provocation, logic, or cause. That being the case, it came as no shock to me that the word ‘resume’ is no longer being used among the ‘cool’ people in the professional world.
I was never terribly fond of the word in the first place, the fact that it is French in origin not withstanding, but it did still take me a moment to get used to the idea of calling it a Curriculum Vitae instead. While I agree that sounds prettier, it’s also much more of a mouthful than it’s predecessor. Therefore, in the grandest modern tradition, it was decided unilaterally and unconsciously to just use initials. So, instead of a resume, you may need to start building a CV.
PDF CV Screen 2PDF CV Screen 3

Now, a CV, I am told, varies from a resume in certain ways. What these ways actually are, and how they can be visually and physically exemplified, no one seems to know. At the very least, no one wants to tell me. So, in my mind, a resume and a CV are just the same, even if one might look or sound prettier than the other. Which is which is up to you. So, having decided that building a new CV could be a fun project, I set out to find some good freeware to do the trick.
I remember back in the covered wagon days when we used these programs called “word processors” to create and print resumes but like most things in that era those have apparently become defunct. It seems there is specialized software for pretty much everything these days, and to keep up, your various office suite programs just continue to add new templates and extensions. That’s just fine with me, but if you decide to use an outside program to build your CV, you may want to give PDF CV a try. It’s web-based, so there’s no software to download, and it’s also completely free so there’s no worry about cost. That’s a good thing, too, when you consider that most people needing to build a CV are probably watching every penny. Heck, even most of us who aren’t making a new CV still watch every penny these days.
PDF CV Screen 4PDF CV Screen 5
So, once you have signed in to the site, which you can do with your Facebook, Google, or other existing account (or just make a whole new account), you’ll then begin building your new CV. Now, you have two basic options for doing this. You can either upload an existing CV or resume, and then see what PDF CV makes of it and how it can be improved, or you can begin building a brand new one just by filling in the boxes on the web forms. It really is that simple. Just fill in the boxes, and you’re done.
Personally, I did not have a previously saved CV or resume so I started a brand new one as an example for this article. I typed in very little actual information but as I moved through the different tabs on the menu, it was very evident that I could put in as much or as little detail as I wanted, from beginning to end. Once that was done, it was time to choose my ‘template’ which determined the overall look and feel of the CV. Currently there are three different templates on offer but the developer has promised more in the future. After the template is chosen, you can then download your CV result as a PDF file. This is handy because it seems to be that every single time I have been asked for a complete resume in an email or other online application, they have wanted it in PDF format. Most sites will offer a conversion utility but you never know how those will turn out so it’s a good idea to have your own, already made.
PDF CV Screen 6
In conclusion, I would suggest this site for anyone who needs to make a resume, wants to make a CV, or is just looking to freshen up an existing one. It’s simple, fast, and free. What more do you need as recommendation? Until next time, my friends.

Seam Carving GUI

You may heave heard of ‘Seam Carving’, also called ‘content aware’ or ‘liquid’ resizing, a technology that can reduce, extend, and even crop elements out of images while keeping it visually plausible and/or cohesive to the human eye (more info here). Seam Carving GUI is a free program that can perform content aware resizing on your images quickly and easily. You can use Steam Carving GUI to remove objects in your image literally by paintings them out of the picture before resizing (see screenshots above).
Seam Carving GUI is a front-end for open source content aware software CAIR.
Content aware resizing is one of those technologies that may be most applicable to handheld devices and small screens, but if you need to do some quick cropping or resizing without creating images that don’t make any visual sense, then check out Seam Carving GUI.
How to use: simple change the resize dimensions in the bottom right. You will have to enter values for both the width and height, obviously (this is not a normal resize where you might only think of one of the two coordinates; you are changing the aspect ration by definition). If you would like to remove visual elements, click on the ‘mark area for removal’ or ‘mark area for retaining’ and paint the relevant parts of your image, then do the resizing.
Note: if your image is too big to fit into the display area, you can zoom in or out of it using the ‘view’
The verdict: if you’re an absolute beginner when it comes to image manipulation you will like this simple tool because it can quickly resize or crop out unwanted visual elements while producing something that makes sense visually.
If you are a sophisticated image manipulation guru, on the other and, then you might really be able put this tool to good use, at least as a precursor for more refined edits afterwards with a bitmap editing software.
For the rest of us average users, Seam Carving GUI may be worth downloading just to experiment and play it. You will probably not be disappointed.
Version tested: 1.11 (Seam Carving GUI) using CAIR 2.19
Compatibility: Windows, Mac, Linux
