Review
Media Portal is an open source program that can turn your PC into an advanced multi-media center. With this program you can watch movies, TV, listen to the radio or to your music files, record TV shows or read you emails and RSS feed items. The people that made this program initially worked on the media center application for Microsoft XBox and after finishing that they created this open source program for the PC.
The program is very complex and my advice is to take some time to configure it right after finishing the installation procedure. You can add your TV tuner or DVB card so that it will be recognized by the program later on. You can also use various types of remote controls that are supported by this software.

Once you have finished the configuration you can get going, watch TV, movie files, music, you can even get the weather if you have a working internet connection.

There is almost no limit to what this program can do. The only thing that was a bit disappointing for me was that it’s quite greedy with your system resources and it tends to get sluggish and slow now and then. If you have a low end PC you might better not even try to install this, it could bring your PC to its knees faster than you think.
The program can also be enriched with the several plugins and extensions that are available on the developer’s website.

HandBrake is an open source and multiplatform program that can transcode video files. It is able to handle the most popular video file types and containers and it’s available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X platforms.
Review
When it comes to video transcoders there are a lot of freeware options available right now, from simple straightforward programs to more complex and advanced software. You might already know about MeGui or the “classic” AutoGK, or maybe you were impressed by Rono’s review of XMedia Recode a few days ago. And these are only a few of the plethora of free video transcoders that are available nowadays. With all this competition it could be tough to find the right one for your specific needs and that’s why I decided to publish another review of such a program, so that you’ll have more information about various software and hopefully you’ll be able to make the right decision.
Although there are a few advanced options available in the program, HandBrake is pretty straightforward and easy to use. First you have to select your source and it can be a DVD, a disc image or a DVD VIDEO_TS folder. And there’s more: you can use as a source file basically any multimedia file it can use libavformat to read and libavcodec to decode, and that means dozens of popular or not so popular file formats and codecs.

Once you have selected your source you can pick one of the presets that are available in the right sidebar, from iPod specific files to the “classic” avi or mkv files. I chose the normal preset which I tweaked a bit  to get a xvid avi file with an average bitrate around 1500 kbps. Although the picture in the DVD files that I selected as source was 16:9 HandBrake informed me that it was a 4:3 video. But since I had the same experience with other transcoders before I was sure that the output file will come out 16:9. Which it did after all

The process took about 40 minutes to turn an hour long film from DVD to avi using a 2-pass encoding process. As I said the output file came out quite alright, good quality and the correct aspect ratio. As for the output file types that you can select there are a few options: avi, mkv, mp4 or ogm using MPEG-4 (Xvid or others ) or H.264 encoders.

The thing that disappointed me a little bit was that HandBrake can’t extract the subtitles from the DVD like AutoGK used to do. So if you select a subtitle stream it will be hardcoded into the output file, you can’t have it create external subs. In this case I have to use a third party program, SubRip, to get the subtitles as I want them.

Windows users definitely do not have a shortage of video converters at their disposal. That’s great on the one hand but on the other hand it could make the selection process quite difficult. The video converter applications differ greatly in complexity, some require minimal user input and knowledge of video terminology while others do require advanced knowledge about bitrates, codecs, filters or framerates.
XMedia Recode falls into both categories. The free video converter comes with several pre-configured profiles that can be used to convert videos with just a few clicks and no background knowledge at all. There are profiles available for gaming systems like Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Sony’s Playstation 3 and for mobile devices like Apple’s iPod and iPhone series, dozens of Nokia cell phones and other devices. Way more than 100 profiles are available to select and there is the option to select custom settings as well in case the device is not in the list.
Custom settings are very extensive. Dozens of video and output formats and codecs can be selected to convert the video into a different format.


Video files can be opened from the computer’s hard drive or directly from the DVD (or video_ts folders located on your hard disk drive)
XMedia Recode provides features that most video converters do not. Most of these features are located in the Crop / Preview tab. This includes the option to cut part of the movie, change the resolution, crop the movie, deblock, invert or correct the colors.
This freeware program uses a German interface by default but it can be changed in Optionen > Sprache to English, French, Japanese and Italian. It also has a portable version.

KMPlyer is a versatile freeware media player that supports many video file formats and containers. It can also handle various types of subtitle files.

My favorite video player right now is the open source SMPlayer, I like the way it works and of course I love the fact that it’s open source. But since many people asked me over and over to try KMPlayer I finally decided to give it a go. I installed it in my PC a few months ago and I played some video files with it from time to time. Now it’s the moment to evaluate the program and see if I’ll keep it or if it will get uninstalled.
First of all the program supports various types of container formats such as VCD, DVD, AVI, MKV, Ogg Theora, OGM, 3GP, MPEG, WMV, RealMedia or QuickTime. So you can say that it plays just about anything. It can also handle various subtitle formats, from the widespread .srt to closed captions or transport stream subtitles. And above all it has a quite low memory footprint.
The first impression that I had after looking at the interface was that it’s quite simple and clean, not clogged with too many commands, bars and menus.

But if you get deep into the program settings you’ll have quite a good time, there are countless options that you can customize to suit your needs and taste.

The feature that I liked the most was the nice control box that can be opened alongside the main video window. That’s when KMPlayer can no longer be simple, it gets very complex for the users that want to customize and play with the various video, audio or subtitle settings.

Overall this freeware program looked pretty solid, it never crashed while I used it and it is versatile indeed – you can use it as a simple video player or you can tweak your heart out through the control box or the preferences panel.

Readon TV Movie Radio Player is a freeware internet TV program that allows you to watch and listen to thousands of free online internet TV and radio stations legally and with no charge at all. There is no paid version with more features, just the free one with everything in it.

Internet TV is growing fast lately, there are numerous TV stations that broadcast regularly on the internet with decent quality streams. There are also a lot of programs that can play internet TV, from JLC’s Internet TV to Veoh TV or Miro. Somebody recommended Readon TV Movie Radio Player and I decided to give it a go. First of all the name of the program is maybe the less creative name I’ve ever seen… But let’s go further. When you open the program you’ll be greeted by a splash screen that promotes a different name for the program, “Redon Player”. I guess they still didn’t decide on the right name

The interface is quite simple, the TV stations on the right and the video on the left. You can browse through all the available stations by country, by name or by genre. I’ve tested about two dozens of them and they all worked. Also the streams have decent quality, I’ve already added some sports channels to my favorites

The program can also open third party SopCast and ShoutCast streams. You can also record some of the broadcasts with the help of the VLC plugin.

Despite the not so pretty appearance Readon TV Movie Radio Player is a solid freeware internet tv program, the stations that I’ve tried all work and the video streams open quite fast. Another good thing about this freeware program is that it does not have a paid version with more features, it even allows you to open the adult channels free of charge.

Submagic is a freeware program for the Windows operating system that can be used to edit subtitles. It can help you create, edit, convert, synchronize or translate subtitles. The only feature missing to make this the perfect solution would be a subtitle downloader.


Review
The tabbed interface provides the means to access the various functions of the software program starting with the file operations tab append, split or convert subtitles easily. Subtitles can be imported in various formats including the popular srt and sub.
There is also an option to analyze existing subtitles for problems like lines with to many characters, empty lines or overlapping times. But analyzing is not the only automatic option that Submagic offers. There is also a very extensive error fixing feature that can fix more than 20 common problems and errors of subtitles including the correction of ocr errors, removal of line separators or the fixing of quotes. Several fixes contain multiple choices that the user can chose from.
The Edit tab can be used to search subtitles, find and replace text and to insert, add, delete or split them. The final tab in the editing process is the synchronize tab which can be just to finetune the display of the lines in the movie.

All of this would not be helpful if there was not some kind of movie preview feature to test the subtitles. That’s possible in the Play Movie tab which also lists some of the commonly used functions mentioned earlier on in the article. It is for instance possible to insert or delete lines directly or to shift and stretch the lines to synchronize perfectly with the movie.
Another interesting option is the movie converter which can be used to convert movies from NTSC format to PAL and vice versa. The final tab contains general options that define how parameters like font sizes for the subtitles, the default screen format and several others like colors or directories on the computer system.

SubRip is a legendary freeware program that allows you to extract the subtitles from DVD movies and save them as .srt or other file formats.


Review
As I told you before I like to make subtitles now and then for my friends and I’m using a great open source program for that, Aegisub. But when it comes to extracting the subtitles from a DVD Aegisub doesn’t help. Fortunately there is SubRip, it’s also open source and very easy to use once you get the hang of it. The program can handle DVD vob subs and you can also use it to attempt to read hardcoded subs.

After you select the proper source .ifo file you can pick the subtitles that you want to extract from the dropdown menu.

Once you start the extraction process you can’t sit back and relax, you have to fill in the characters that the program shows you to make sure it recognizes each character properly. But don’t worry, you won’t have to type for hours. After you fill in the letter “u” as in the screenshot below the program will automatically recognize it from that point on.

Once the extraction is over you can save the subtitle file as .srt or other file formats and that’s it, you’ re done. The program does not come with an installer, so you’ll have to create a folder for it, extract the zip archive there and just run the program.
The program was created by Brain and after he released the source code it was developed by a few other nice people.

SMPlayer is a free, open source, media player able to play almost any video file format. It also has a portable version and a Linux version.
Review
My favorite video player was so far GOM Player, a solid freeware program able to play many file formats. Now I decided to give SMPlayer a try, mainly because it’s open source and you already know that I have a particular weak spot for open source programs because I really believe that they represent the future of computer programs. Anyway, overall I am satisfied with GOM Player although I hoped that the new versions would bring some more features.
SMPlayer is based on MPlayer, maybe the best video playing engine out there. The people that made SMPlayer tried to add more features to this solid base and after a first look I can say that they did quite a good job. The GUI (graphic user interface) is very well designed, you have access to selecting subtitles and audio tracks right from the main toolbar. Overall the interface has no flaws, all the important commands are right there.

If you need access to the more advanced features you can either right click on the video or go through the menus in the top toolbar.

An interesting feature is that you can search for subtitles on opensubtitles.org right from the program.

The most interesting feature of SMPlayer is that it remembers your settings. If you play a movie and you have to leave and shut down the computer, when you come back and play that file it will play with the previous settings, from audio track and subtitles to the audio volume.
SMPlayer will play a wide range of video files, from DVD files on your hard disk to flash video or avi. Here are a few more features for your consideration:
- Configurable subtitles. You can choose font and size, and even colors for the subtitles.
- Audio track switching. You can choose the audio track you want to listen. Works with avi and mkv. And of course with DVDs.
- Seeking by mouse wheel. You can use your mouse wheel to go forward or backward in the video.
- Video equalizer, allows you to adjust the brightness, contrast, hue, saturation and gamma of the video image.
- Multiple speed playback. You can play at 2X, 4X… and even in slow motion.
- Filters. Several filters are available: deinterlace, postprocessing, denoise… and even a karaoke filter (voice removal).
- Audio and subtitles delay adjustment. Allows you to sync audio and subtitles.
- Advanced options, such as selecting a demuxer or video & audio codecs.
- Playlist. Allows you to enqueue several files to be played one after each other. Autorepeat and shuffle supported too.
- Preferences dialog. You can easily configure every option of SMPlayer by using a nice preferences dialog.
The one that I like the most is the seeking by mouse wheel, it’s so easy and it works so well… If GOM Player would have added such a feature I might never have tried another program…

Being a quite obsessed cinema fan I’m often pushed to work with subtitles, sometimes for my own personal use, sometimes for my friends, translating Italian or French subtitles to English. The program I was using for this purposes was Subtitle Workshop, a solid and simple freeware program. One of the readers of this blog, Rachel, suggested that I should try a more advanced freeware subtitle editor, Aegisub.
The first impression was very good, it supports virtually any type of subtitle file, it’s fast and reliable.

As I said, I’m into translating subtitles quite often, so the first thing I wanted to check out was the Translation Assistant. There’s not much I can say about it, just that it’s more than useful, a great tool for subtitle translators.

With Aegisub you can do almost anything you could imagine with your subtitles, even rotate the lines and make karaoke subtitles.

The program might look a little bit too complex for a not very advanced user, but the support you can get is simply awesome: you can fin a comprehensive manual, find support in the forum and even on the dedicated IRC channel.
The features list is quite impressive, just take a look:
