Lately I’ve been searching for a fast and easy way to share files with my friends. E-mail is out of the question for larger files, file sharing websites are not very secure, but it seems I found the right software for the purpose. It’s called Giga Tribe v2.45, and it has a free version. Let’s test it.

First of all you have to install the program. The setup package is lightweight, only 1.6 MB. The installation is easy and fast. After that you have to pick an username and a password and you’re on your way. You get to select which folders you want to share with your friends. I’ve made a new folder for that, it’s called “Shared”.

You can make several groups in which to invite your friends.

After you get your friends to install the program too you can insert their usernames and make them members of your online network.

I’ve tested the process with my sister, and in a few minutes she was downloading a film from my shared folder. Way to go!

I must say that I’m very happy that I came across this program, it’s easy, secure and free! It’s true, the free version has some limitations (you can only download a file at a time) but still it’s very useful and secure: only the users of your network can see your shared files and all the data exchanged in the network is encrypted using a Blowfish encryption with a 256 bit key. And last but not least, interrupted file exchanges can be resumed with no data loss! This is good! And one more thing, it doesn’t take much memory while running, only 3 MB!
