AltDVB helps you take control over your DVB card. I have a Skystar 2 PCI card and a satellite dish, and I’ve been using two programs for it: AltDVB and ProgDVB. Both come with useful features and it took me some time to decide which one to use. Finally, I chose AltDVB.

It took me some time to get used to its multiple features, but once you get used to it the road is clear. After you scan the available satellites you can pick your favorite channels and then you can watch TV, listen to Radio stations and even record what you see and hear. The output files are in the .ts format, which you can then convert to .mpg or .avi with other third-party software.

With the help of the v-plug plug-in you can even watch encrypted channels (I remind you that watching TV channels without a valid subscription is illegal
The only thing I found annoying about AltDVB is that it does not provide the necessary encoders, so you have to install your own mpeg2 or mpeg4 encoders for watching the satellite TV channels. AltDVB will hopefully recognize your installed codecs and then you can pick which one to use.
